The infection can ascend to kidneys very fast in females as the urethra is small (4cm) so it is important to treat the infection asap. The urinary tract has two parts. Upper urinary tract includes kidneys and lower urinary tract includes bladder and urethra. Lower urinary tract infection (cystitis or urethritis) is more common and easy to treat whereas upper tract infection (Pyelonephritis) is more serious and difficult to treat.
