Worms in kids

Few of my friends are always  worried about their child's growth. Natasha always keeps me asking why her daughter is not gaining weight and why she falls sick again and again.  The worms are parasites which feed off the host’s body and eventually result in malnutrition, affecting the healthy growth of the child.  Worms may get entry into abdomen and create health problems .          Though all age groups can get worms, kids are more susceptible. Worms in abdomen can affect the appetite and ultimately growth of a child. When a child is not eating properly we assume he is showing tantrums or too busy in playing and ignore it but it can be worms those are troubling the stomach. When to suspect worms? Itchy bottom, which is usually worse at night Redness around the bottom area Restlessness due to itching Difficulty in falling asleep Visible worms – small, white and 8-13 mm long (often mistaken for bits of toilet paper!) ...

  • Normally it should be taken warm, so it is easy to digest and doesn't cause bloating.
  • Don't give zero fat or double toned milk to kids as fat is important for them.
  •  You can have it cold in case of heartburn with hyper acidity.
  • You can add turmeric powder in case of sore throat. Turmeric acts anti- inflammatory and with milk the absorption of curcumin is also better.
  • You can add dry ginger powder to milk in case of acute attack of joint pain.
  • It is a good natural energy drink also , so replace it with your other synthetic energy drinks .
The different milks such as cows, buffalo's, goat's etc have specific qualities.
e.g. Cow's milk is easy to digest and has lesser fat content so is good for weight watchers. On other hand buffalo milk has more fat and takes more time to digest and is good for kids and those who want to gain weight.  Goat's milk is lightest to digest and have less allergens. It improves digestion and reduces inflammatory reactions in body' have very less cholesterol. So it is good for kids , elderly people and for chronic ill patients. Almond milk and soy milk are new choices of people who want to avoid animal based, lactose containing milk. As compared to cow's milk they contain less sugar and protein and have no natural calcium . Though they are good for weight watchers and for people with lactose intolerence.

Bone health:

Bones are the framework of our body. Bones support muscles and internal organs and are important for body movement as well. If the bones are weak they can break with little force i.e. fracture.

Along with diet exercise is equally important for bone health. So kids should be encouraged to play outdoor games like running, playing football etc, dancing, cycling.

What if kids refuse milk?

It is a difficult task for mothers when child is fussy for milk. Kids learn from parents. So it is important to set a good example. Parents should  include milk and milk products in daily diet.

  • Flavoured milk with chocolate or coco powder
  • milk added to cereal
  • fruit smoothie with added milk
  • milk in the form of kheer ( Indian dessert)
  • Involve paneer, cheese, butter, ghee in diet.

You can speak to kids and explain the importance of milk for health.

If still kids don't agree then there are other food items other than milk rich in calcium which can be added to diet e.g. tofu, some green vegetables, juices fortified with calcium, cereals, fish etc.

What is milk allergy?

Milk can be an allergen. Symptoms include urticaria ( rash, redness and swelling on skin), vomiting, breathlessness, lose motions with bloody stools etc. In such case you have to stop milk and all milk products from diet.

What is lactose intolerance?

Milk contains lactose which is one form of sugar, our body has one enzyme called as lactase which is important for break down of lactose. If someone produces less lactase then it is difficult to digest milk then it is called as lactose intolerance. Symptoms include bloating, diarrhea, vomiting etc. In such case you can opt for other milks which don't contain lactose .

Can kids drink almond milk?

If child (above 1 year) has lactose intolerance then it is okay to give almond or soy milk but have to take notice that it contain less fat and growing kids need more fat for their brain growth.  So the milk should be fortified with calcium, vit D, vit. B12 and added sugar.
